Aileen Kelly

Got to a new poetry launch at the CAE in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago; this time Aileen Kelly’s new collection from Five Islands Press. The new collection is called ‘City and Stranger’ and was launched by Morag Fraser, who gave a pretty impressive kind of launch speech; talking about some of the poems individually at some length, and reading two or three poems herself.

Aileen then read some of the poem herself, and read them well too. It was interesting to hear her again, because I read the poems in my head a bit differently, less solemnly or reverentially, but if there were ironic undertones or counterpoints I didn’t see them in the reading. Alex Skovron commented to me on the quality of the poems, how they were the ‘real thing’ I think he said.
