smalltown memorials

Last July I blogged about standing in a second hand bookshop, tossing up between buying a John Betjeman book or Geoff Page’s classic UQP poetry book Smalltown Memorials. I went for he Betjeman, thinking that I’d pick up the Page book later that week, but when I returned it was gone!

This week, it was back, and I picked up the 1975 UQP Papeback Poets Second Series No. 5 edition with much joy! Lots of good poems here apart from the title poem, including Bondi Afternoon, 1915 and Christ at Gallipoli. These UQP books were probably the mainstay of Australian poetry for a time there in the late 70s.

It was a bit of a wait, but good to find it at last.
