Terribly sad to hear yesterday that Ausralian poet, Dorothy Porter, has died aged 51. I liked her work a lot and met her several times over the years. More important than that, her writing was powerful and compelling. I can’t think of another contemporary poet who had a greater impact on the students I worked with than Porter. Many of the students who read her work would come back to it again and again, and would try to write like her too, surely the ultimate compliment.

It’s a sad loss for poetry.

There are news reports from the AUSTRALIAN and the  ABC

  1. Sad news indeed! I was a librarian at the Blue Mountains City Library for many years and Dorothy, when she lived at Blackheath, read her work at the library and was very generous with her time and advice. She was a fine poet and a fine person.
